Microsoft Tenant Connect setup guide

A detailed guide to connect your Tenant for use with the LoopUp Cloud Telephony Admin Portal

In this article

Why Connect Your Tenant?

The connection between LoopUp and your Microsoft tenant enables integrated capabilities to manage your cloud telephony, such as:

  • Dynamic number management, including viewing which numbers are allocated to aid in capacity planning
  • Easy self-service telephony provisioning for your users, including auto-selecting an available number
  • Allow your staff to easily add service for users, without needing to be a Teams administrator
  • Accurate billing related to your enabled users

If you’ve previously connected your tenant, this is a new, better way to connect. We highly recommend you take a couple of minutes to update your connection and benefit from:

  • Improved access control (app is granted access through Microsoft Entra ID rather than a user account)
  • Simpler connection process
  • Increased resilience

How to setup Microsoft Tenant Connect?

Step 1: Sign in to the Cloud Telephony Admin Portal

To connect your tenant, simply go to: https://admin.loopup.com/tenant-connection, click Set Up Tenant Connection (or Update Your Connection if you’ve previously connected) and follow the simple setup steps:

Step 2: Sign in to Microsoft to connect the LoopUp app

To allow the app to connect, you'll need to sign in to Microsoft. You must sign in using your Microsoft credentials connected to your company's Microsoft 365 tenant (not a personal Microsoft account), and you must be authorized to grant tenant-wide consent on behalf of your organization.

Step 3: Assign access to the app in Entra ID

Please grant the LoopUp application Teams Communications Administrator access in Microsoft Entra ID. You'll need permission to assign roles to complete this step.

  • Sign in to Microsoft Entra ID
  • Select Identity on the left panel
  • Click the Roles & admins dropdown and choose Roles & admins
  • Select the Teams Communications Administrator role
  • Click Add assignment, enter LoopUp Tenant Connect in the search box, select, then click Add

Step 4: Verify setup

Once you've completed steps 1, 2 and 3, click the Verify Setup button to check that everything is set up properly. When your tenant is successfully connected, you'll see on the Tenant Connection page confirmation that the connection has been created. You'll also be able to see all your users and manage their phone service and more within the admin portal.

What is happening?

Using Microsoft 365 native features such as Microsoft Entra ID Enterprise applications means LoopUp can securely integrate your tenant with LoopUp via the 'LoopUp Tenant Connect' application. The following Microsoft Graph permissions are utilised to achieve this:

  • CrossTenantInformation.ReadBasic.All: the ability to read cross-tenant basic information
  • TeamSettings.ReadWrite.All: the ability to read and change teams' settings

The enterprise application also needs to be assigned the role Teams Communications Administrator. This is to allow the admin portal to access the data it needs (such as a user’s UPN) to provide LoopUp’s full suite of capabilities (such as assigning a number to a specific user).

FAQs

What permissions are needed?

To connect your tenant you’ll need one of the following roles:

Who can access the Tenant Connection page in the admin portal?

Any user on your account can access the Tenant Connection page and can start the tenant connection steps. However, only users with the required Microsoft permissions will be able to progress through the steps to connect your tenant.

Why did I see the error message "Need admin approval" in step 2?

To connect the LoopUp app you need to be able to grant tenant-wide consent on behalf of your organization. If you have seen this message, it means your user does not have sufficient privileges to complete this step. Check that you're using your Microsoft credentials associated with your company's Microsoft tenant. If you are and you don't have sufficient rights, please ask someone else in your organization who has the required rights to complete the tenant connection process themselves on admin.loopup.com.

Why did I see the error message "We weren't able to verify the app connection. Please try again or contact support if you're unable to complete this step."?

You will see this message if you click Cancel on the Microsoft sign in or if the response from Microsoft in the verification times out. Try again and ensure you don’t click Cancel.
